Abstract
Helicobacter pylori were identified by Marshall and Warren in 1983. The H. pylori survive in the forbidding harsh acid environment of the stomach and duodenum by hiding in the mucus layer and neutralizing stomach acid secreted in its local surrounding environment. Multiple lines of evidences suggest that H. pylori infection is one of the primary causes of gastritis and peptic ulcer, which are provoked by oxidative stress and inflammation. The H. pylori-induced inflammation has been implicated in the pathogenesis and progression of gastric cancer. More than 50% of the world¡¯s population is
infected by this bacterium. Various approaches have been considered in the development of vaccines against H. pylori, most of which have been based on the use of selected antigens known to be involved in the pathogenesis of the infection, such as urease, the vacuolating cytotoxin (VacA), the cytotoxinassociated antigen (CagA), the neutrophil-activating protein (NAP), and others. In the present study, we investigated natural urease inhibitors which can be applied as potential therapeutic agents for H. pylori infection. (Cancer Prev Res 11, 129-136, 2006)
